Bronze Cast Medium Block Plane – Essential for Guitar, Violin Makers, and Precision Work

This block plane is a must-have for any luthier, woodworker, or precision craftsman. It excels in tasks where larger planes can't reach, offering exceptional quality and precision. In fact, it was recommended to me during my time at violin school as an essential tool for a luthier.

Designed for one-handed use - the cast circular depression for the index finger at the toe of the plane is in lieu of a knob.

The original Stanley 102, introduced in 1877 was marketed as “a convenient tool, proven so useful for making slight repairs to windows, doors, furniture, etc., that it was expected to be wanted in every household”.

Luban has improved on the original design:

  • Cast from bronze, ensuring it won't rust
  • Manufactured with a perfectly flat sole for precise work
  • Lowered bedding angle for enhanced comfort
  • Easily adjustable depth of cut screw for fine-tuning
  • High-quality T10 carbon steel blade, which holds a sharp edge for a long time
  • Ergonomic cap that fits comfortably in hand

With a bedding angle of 12 degrees (bevel up), this plane performs exceptionally well on end grain. The included T10 carbon steel blade is sharpened to a 25-degree angle. Extra blades are available for purchase separately in our e-shop.

This plane is also available with a larger bedding angle of 20 degrees, see our Luban 103 plane

Note: Although the blade is factory-sharpened, it is highly recommended to hone it before use to achieve lasting sharpness.

Valuable for Various Tasks:

  • Paring end grain
  • Finishing work
  • Removing glue residue
  • Fitting parts with tight tolerances
  • Chamfering
